Gigablue selects Puro.earth as its trusted certification standard to verify its carbon removal solution

  • Gigablue is collaborating with Puro.earth to certify its carbon dioxide removal services under the Puro Standard.

  • Engaging with Puro.earth builds on the eighteen-month-long review conducted by the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research to gauge the permanency, sustainability, integrity, and scalability of Gigablue’s marine carbon fixation and sequestration (MCFS) methodology.

  • By engaging Puro.earth to certify its credits with the Puro Standard, Gigablue aims to align with the highest quality standards for measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) available in the voluntary carbon markets.

New York, NY, January 30, 2025 – Gigablue and Puro.earth announce a new initiative to certify Gigablue’s marine carbon fixation and sequestration carbon removal solution under the Puro Standard – the leading standard for engineered carbon removal methods in the voluntary carbon market.

This effort ensures that Gigablue is operating to the highest standards possible in the voluntary carbon market and establishes frameworks for the development, verification, and registration of ocean-based carbon removal projects.

Gigablue recently announced the largest ocean-based carbon removal offtake agreement to date, a four-year, 200,000 ton transaction with SkiesFifty.

Working with Puro.earth will establish a methodology adhering to the robust and rigorous standards for voluntary carbon removals and enhanced CDR methods for distributing carbon credits. Gigablue, which is on a path to remove a gigaton of carbon dioxide by 2035, has been researching and developing its technology in the deep ocean 300 kilometers from New Zealand.

Ocean carbon dioxide removal is one of the most promising pathways to help mitigate climate change. Covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, oceans already absorb and store vast amounts of carbon dioxide in what’s known as the ocean carbon sink. The world's ocean has already absorbed around 25% of the carbon dioxide emissions produced by humans. Gigablue’s MCFS methodology builds on the ocean's natural ability to store carbon – permanently removing CO₂  from the atmosphere to counteract the effects of climate change.

Drawing on Puro.earth’s expertise in establishing standardized methodologies further advances this critical approach to removal. With a wide array of industry partners, Puro.earth is a critical part of the carbon removal ecosystem and is accredited by the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA).

Ori Shaashua, Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Gigablue:

“Certification under the Puro Standard puts Gigablue on a path to issue verified, third-party certified marine carbon fixation and sequestration (MCFS) credits. Leveraging a CDR-specific, high-quality carbon removal standard and registry like Puro.earth can create opportunities for others in the ocean carbon removal industry and scale solutions for the hardest to decarbonize industries.”

Antti Vihavainen, CEO of Puro.earth:

“Gigablue’s innovative approach to marine-based carbon removal is an inspiring step forward in the fight against climate change. At Puro.earth, we are delighted to explore how this cutting-edge solution, with its significant scalability potential, can be brought into a methodology that aligns with our principles for high-quality carbon removal, ensuring credibility, transparency, and real impact.”

About Gigablue
Gigablue offers a deep science-based solution to combat climate change while helping corporations and countries reach their net-zero goals. Their pioneering carbon dioxide removal system focuses on effectively exporting CO₂ to the deep ocean. Deployed geo-specific engineered substrates sink rapidly and predictably, ensuring long-term carbon storage for thousands of years. Utilizing in-situ sampling and precise measurement techniques to obtain ground-truth evidence of sequestered carbon, Gigablue provides reliable and safe CDR. By collaborating with research institutions and environmental communities, Gigablue is dedicated to delivering substantial benefits for both the planet and its inhabitants. www.gigablue.co
